James Earl Ray back in hospital in serious condition
January 26, 1997Web posted at: 11:00 p.m. EST NASHVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) -- James Earl Ray, jailed for the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., is back in the hospital for treatment of chronic liver disease. His condition was upgraded from critical to serious on Sunday. Ray was taken to the Nashville Memorial Hospital late Saturday -- his third recent hospitalization outside prison. He spent slightly over a week in the Nashville hospital in late December, and was hospitalized there from January 3 to January 10. He then went back to the prison hospital, where he was first admitted in September. His lawyer said earlier this month that Ray, 68, will die within months unless he gets a liver transplant.
