ATLANTA (CNN) -- Martin Luther King III will become the next
president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference,
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Sunday. The
organization was founded by his late father and other civil
rights leaders 40 years ago.
The Rev. Joseph Lowery, who is stepping down after 20 years
as head of the civil rights group, told the newspaper that
convention delegates will meet next Saturday at Ebenezer
Baptist Church to vote on the appointment.
Lowery told The Associated Press he could neither confirm nor
deny the report. King could not be reached for comment.
Martin Luther King Jr. served as SCLC president from 1957
until his assassination in 1968. Lowery announced his
retirement early this year, but a successor had not been
selected at the time of the SCLC anniversary banquet held in
his honor in July. At the time, King reportedly was
considered a viable candidate for the job.
