TAIPEI, Taiwan (CNN) -- A Taiwan airliner crashed Friday near the island of Matsu in the Taiwan Strait.
Two pilots and 15 passengers reportedly were aboard the Formosa Airlines plane, a twin-prop Dornier-228. The flight, which originated in Taipei, went down about 10 miles from Matsu's airport at about 4:30 p.m. Some reports said all 17 aboard were saved, while others said as many as six people were trapped in the wreckage.
Matsu, controlled by Taiwan, is about six miles from China's southeast coast, near the site of China's March military exercises. A Formosa Airlines spokesman blamed the crash on poor weather.
